Jeju, a historical city with over 1,000 years of history

This is a slogan that comes up every time urban development in Jeju is discussed. However, the old downtown, said to have been established since the Goryeo Dynasty, has so much that is disconnected, collapsed, and disappeared that it is difficult to examine its historical layers. The only standard serving as a benchmark for restoring the history of the old downtown is the Tamna Sunryeokdo, created during the Joseon Dynasty. It is an ancient historical city, yet there is a lack of accumulated historical records.

I believe that finding the city's identity is a prerequisite before discussing restoration and regeneration. Identity is formed by the accumulation of stories from people who have lived there for a long time, and it can only be preserved if it is recorded. Furthermore, I believe there is a need for foundational data that goes beyond mere documentation to describe the sentiment of the old city center, realize what is truly important, and formulate future plans.

The village map produced this time captures the lifestyle, culture, and landscape of Jeju's old downtown in 2019 and 2020. Although much changes occur during the course of the survey, we intend to take a long-term approach and create a map of the old downtown villages for 10 or 20 years from now, thereby building an accumulated map of life in Jeju.
